Over the years private equity has generally been the mainstay of the institutional investor, but has recently come to prominence for the individual investor with several government initiatives aimed at encouraging investment into the sub-£2m market, including Venture Capital Trusts “VCT” and the Enterprise Investment Scheme “EIS”. These schemes offer the more sophisticated investor substantial tax breaks thus offsetting some of the risk involved. - The UK industry is the largest and most developed in Europe accounting for nearly 40% of total annual private equity investment, and is second to the USA in world importance.
- The UK private equity industry has invested over £70 billion (over £50 billion in the UK) in around 28,000 companies since 1983.
- £9.7 billion was invested in 2004, in over 1,500 companies, of which over £5.3 billion was invested in over 1,300 companies in the UK.
- London is a favoured location for emerging companies and countries to raise capital. Many Asian, European and other emerging countries are coming to the UK and London in particular to raise capital.
